Hiring Student Workers
UVA HR supports hiring of student employees across Grounds. The Student Hiring website offers a step-by-step overview of the hiring process for managers from how to post a job requisition to onboarding new hires. Additionally, the Guide to Student Employment provides information for managers on using Workday for hiring student employees.
Federal Work Study (FWS)
Managers are encouraged to hire eligible students using Federal Work-Study. FWS contributes 75% of the student’s wage creating a significant cost savings for the department. Managers can learn more about hiring students with FWS in the FWS Employer Handbook.
Wage Authorization
The Wage Authorization outlines important guidelines for employment of student wage employees as well as Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) and Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs). Individuals hiring student employees should be familiar with the pay rates, pay schedules, and eligibility requirements for student employment updated annually in the Wage Authorization.
